Way of the Cross
Station V
Simon Helps Jesus
with the Cross
Stop and really look at this moment in the life of Jesus. What strikes you? What speaks to your heart? What do you think Jesus is feeling? What does it tell you about how much he loves you? Spend some time in prayer and listen to what Jesus is inviting you into.
As St. Leonard was devoted to the Stations of the Cross, we are making this the centerpiece of the 150th Anniversary and every month we will be highlighting one of the Stations. We invite you to pray and reflect on these monthly meditations to enter fully into this moment of Jesus’ Passion and to allow yourself to be transformed by the Cross.
Meditation offered by Nicholas Baldecchi. Nick and his wife and two daughters, are relocating from St. Joseph, Missouri as Nick joins Wentworth Institute as the Head Women's Volleyball Coach and the Assistant Men's Coach.
When I meditate on the Fifth Station where Simon is taken from the crowd and forced into helping Jesus carry his cross, I wonder what I would have done if I were Simon. We know very little about Simon other than he was there observing Jesus carrying his cross when suddenly he was pulled out of the crowd by Roman soldiers to hurry the process along as the Lord’s strength began to leave his body under the weight of the cross. If I were Simon, would I refuse to help a convicted man who is carrying the object of his death or would I not hesitate to help ease another’s burden in their greatest time of need no matter the circumstances.
I think in life we all have juggled these decisions; do we turn our back to those in need or do we help? We should be reminded that Jesus will always be there to help us bear our cross, no matter the circumstance, and he does this to show us that there is love, kindness, and mercy in the service of others. It makes me reflect on how I can be better in my service to others and as Simon did, bear the cross and follow our Lord.
"If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”
Journal Question:
Have I turned my back on someone in need? Do I help lift the burdens or those around me? How can I be of service? Let us pray for all the “Simons” in our lives who help us carry our crosses.
